Three Underrated Anime Series You Need to Watch

Hello my dear weaboos! It's 2016, and by now there are so many amazing anime that exist in the world; however, not all of them are well known.  In fact sometimes the best anime can seemingly slip under the radar and miss all the mainstream hype.  Today I will present three very good anime that are quite underrated amongst the otaku community, and explain why you need to watch them.

#3. "Jyu Oh Sei (Planet of the Beast King)":
Jyu Oh Sei is an anime not many have heard of, and it's a shame because this show is actually worth watching.  Its genre is a sci-fi action/adventure series set far into the future.  Not only do humans live in a star system 150 light years from earth, but a number of planets residing in the star system, "Belkan", have been terraformed to resemble earth.  It follows a character named Thor,

(No. Not this Thor.)
who was thrust onto a dangerous planet, Chimaera, along with his twin brother Rai, where he must learn to survive.  It's an anime that explores human nature in a whole different world and environment.  If you're a fan of sci-fi, you definitely need to watch this one.  The only drawback is the 11 episodes they had to jampack such a huge and interesting concept/plot into.  Although with more episodes it could've reached it's full potential, nevertheless, it still an anime worth watching.  If you're curious, and want a more in-depth explanation and analysis of the plot, go check out "Alternate Realities" blog post on Jyu Oh Sei.

#2. "Noein: To Your Other Self":
Noein was one of the first anime I had ever watched (aside from "the big 3"), and is an instant classic that I fall back on.  Its genre would also fall into the adventurous, sci-fi category, but mostly takes place in a much more familiar setting compared to that of Jyu Oh Sei.  It explores multiple dimensions that are amongst war with each other. One, La'cryma, is the possible future of our world, and another, Shangri-La, is a possible dimension in the future that is fixated on destroying all of space and time.  A term that can be heard often in this series is the "Dragon Torc", which is the only object capable of stopping Shangri-La.  This show follows a young girl named Haruka, who resides in a dimension not that different from our own.  She is not only the protagonist, but a crucial key in saving reality.  I would highly recommend this anime in a heartbeat.  It unfortunately doesn't get enough credit for how amazing the plot truly is, and is for sure one of the more underrated animes in existence.  Even if you aren't a fan of sci-fi, like me, if you like anime, you definitely need to watch this one.

#1. "Darker Than Black":
Now for those of you who have been anime fans for quite some time, you may be thinking:
"Darker than Black? Underrated?! WTF?".  Or you could not be thinking that.  Regardless, let's be honest for a moment.  Darker than Black is a fairly well received anime that  first aired in 2007.  It has its cult following like most good anime do, and it never really suffered from low popularity.  So what is it doing here?  BECAUSE IT'S SO DAMN UNDERAPPRECIATED YA'LL.  Underrated doesn't always necessarily mean a really good anime no one watched.  Sometimes it just means a really good anime no one appreciated.  Sure, Darker than Black has its flaws, but it never got enough credit for how entertaining it truly was.  As the increasingly saturated anime industry puts out more of the same content, it's becoming harder to find original gems like DTB.  Why is Darker than Black underrated? Because the plot is creative and different, and overall executed very well; yet somehow it never gets brought into the conversation of "good" anime.  So let's dive in.

Ten years ago, "Heaven's Gate" appeared in South America, quickly followed by the appearance of Hell's gate in Japan.  These were abnormal, spatial areas that supersede current human understanding.  Following their appearance, the real sky and stars were replaced with fakes.  The fake stars, however, represent what are known as "contractors".  Contractors are people who possess supernatural skills and abilities, and are known to heavily rely on logic due to their lack of exhibiting emotion.  These contractors are utilized and employed by various organizations to do their bidding. The Black Reaper, also known as BK-201, and/or Hei, is a skillful contractor who works for the Syndicate.

After the "Heaven's War", the organization known as Syndicate became the rising superpower of the world.  In this twisted dark world, Hei carries out mysterious missions and assassinations for the Syndicate, all while increasingly discovering the dangerous threat against the existence of contractors.  This enthralling and unique anime will keep you entertained with phenomenal action scenes, drama, and intriguing theories.  Darker than Black is a sci-fi thriller that deserves your love and appreciation.  It is truly a great anime that has become increasingly underrated with time.
